Quick Tip Tuesday: Create a Stain Removal Kit

This week's tip comes courtesy of one of our furry friends.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmquKmuehs99l4nJfhoGaNwKyfckaYn3Dvo2FBhakUKMacJTrVEu6of7ThaEYnd5REQAr2AIn3VfpjDoXMrod_G9DCmd6CDSYYH3eFsEbnq_1cxe1mP-pgrb3M5JraMT1PBh-xAu5NB0M/s1600/Stain_Removal_Kit_Header.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmquKmuehs99l4nJfhoGaNwKyfckaYn3Dvo2FBhakUKMacJTrVEu6of7ThaEYnd5REQAr2AIn3VfpjDoXMrod_G9DCmd6CDSYYH3eFsEbnq_1cxe1mP-pgrb3M5JraMT1PBh-xAu5NB0M/s1600/Stain_Removal_Kit_Header.png" /></a></div><br />I have been wanting to put together a little DIY Stain Removal Kit for quite awhile, and this weekend I bumped up the urgency after a sick puppy incident.<br /><br />We switched to homemade cleaners a few years ago now, and when we made the switch we also tried to reduce the number of bottles of stain remover we are purchasing for carpet, upholstery and clothing.  In fact, I never found any that worked all that great anyway and have done a lot of reading about how everyday household products do just as well.<br /><br />My problem is that by the time I check out my stain removal guide, I then end up rummaging through my cupboards in hopes that I have everything I need on hand.   Sometimes I do a celebratory dance, sometimes I hear that whomp whomp sound.<br /><br />When it comes to these stain removers, different types of products work better on specific types of stains.  Makeup, sweat, puppy accidents, crayon, grass stains, chapstick, ink, wine and paint stains.... <a href="http://www.bhg.com/homekeeping/house-cleaning/tips/how-to-remove-stains-from-laundry/" target="_blank">Better Homes & Gardens</a> (also <a href="http://www.bhg.com/homekeeping/laundry-linens/stain-removal/stain-removal-products/" target="_blank">here</a>, <a href="http://www.bhg.com/homekeeping/house-cleaning/tips/stain-treatment/" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://www.bhg.com/homekeeping/house-cleaning/tips/stain-tips/" target="_blank">here</a>) & <a href="http://images.marthastewart.com/images/content/web/pdfs/pdf3/stain_removal_basics.pdf" target="_blank">Martha Stewart</a>.  <br /><br />The items I personally found helpful to add to my kit are as follows:<br /><ul><li>Salt</li><li>Vinegar</li><li>Petroleum Jelly</li><li>Peroxide</li><li>Clear Dish Washing Liquid</li><li>Baking Soda</li><li>Rubbing Alcohol</li><li>Corn Starch</li><li>Stain Removal Charts </li></ul>Also, not pictured above: <br /><ul><li>Bottled Water </li><li>Tonic Water </li><li>White blotting rag (to place behind clothing during stain removal)</li><li>Bin to hold supplies (which also doubles as a place to soak stained clothing)</li><li>Q-Tips</li><li>Medicine Dropper</li><li>Linen Brush</li><li>Spray Bottle </li></ul><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>I stuck everything in an empty bin, which will also double as a soaking tub ,and placed it on our counter in the laundry room.  I also laminated and hung the stain removal tips and charts on a command strip behind the kit.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; All Filled Up!

DIY Storage Cabinet

Well!  It took much longer than I planned (which is typically the case with our DIY projects), but now it is done and I am excited to proclaim, "We built a cabinet!"<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxa-4cc-YCDnLHXAs_7GzNF_jS_n0Z3y1iWHJ0Z4JdjfuyKyQCEZ8W21td7Rfo6dWuQJDmkMGjRaftvW82lHk6AQQhm8gRzGZ8rrbvHmkQM74bjAQUJBd9Qm6rACTHv3dlIpJU0AfeX7c/s1600/DIY_Storage_Cabinet_Header.png" /></a></div><br />A little over a year ago we tackled our storage room and <a href="http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2013/09/our-storage-spaces-utility-room-paint.html" target="_blank">I organized all of my painting supplies</a> on some open wooden shelves.  I loved the outcome, but ultimately decided that certain stains, cleaners and spray paints would be better off stored in a location further away from the furnace and water heater.  And if I were going to move some, I thought, better to keep everything together and just move it all.<br /><br />Since taking everything out of the storage room, my paint supplies have been hanging out in limbo.  Stacks of cans and jars have been living in our laundry room until we could find the time and the right solution for getting things organized... again.<br /><br />I had been keeping my eyes out for some sort of cabinet, but nothing that was the right size, color, shape or style was hitting my budget.  Therefore, things have just sat on hold for the last year.  Until now!  We decided to finally get something built to tackle the problem once and for all.<br /><br />Some of my paint supplies are pretty (jars of colorful paint), while others are less sightly (cans of stain).  So, a combination of open and concealed storage would have to do the trick.  And of course we didn't need anything too fancy, considering the ultimate function was just to store paint.<br /><br />Thinking it would be nice to have everything behind doors, I decided on glass upper cabinets and standard lowers.  Although glass faced cabinets are probably totally DIY-able, I opted to seek some out to use and then build the cabinet around them instead.  We checked out some home improvement stores, our local Habitat Re-Store and IKEA.  The most cost effective solution we came across were the <a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?query=BORGSJ%C3%96+white+door" target="_blank">BORGSJÖ white doors from IKEA</a>, which was exactly what I was looking for paired with soft closing hinges and a fair price of $55 for all four doors.<br /><br />Below is the plan we came up for to accommodate the doors we purchased:<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUnUTvwzNldcUtiaUDE4eqFWY_u1phxi-CSs-JYempzr72j_RZ6NgwpE12GjsYiKmwSX9G9TkuElqhhkNomU-Uz5aN80Zb46inAjjpVbjoBElMW44okJZc6MfyXCFF37rNxcFQgQBRMG4/s1600/PaintCabinetPlan.png" /></a></div><br /><br />For this build, we purchased two <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-MDF-Panel-Common-1-2-in-x-4-ft-x-8-ft-Actual-0-500-in-x-48-in-x-96-in-M31240849097000000A/202332602" target="_blank">1/2" inch 4'x8' MDF boards</a> from Home Depot for about $45.  We also purchased 4" crown molding, decorative floor molding and a piece of <a href="http://www.homedepot.com/p/Unbranded-32-sq-ft-MDF-Wall-Panel-739522/202090195" target="_blank">4'x8' MDF paneling</a>.<br /><br />All of the tools and additional supplies we used to build this cabinet, we already had on hand:<br /><ul><li>Circular Saw</li><li>Saw Guide</li><li>Saw Horses</li><li>Miter Saw</li><li>Brad Nailer</li><li>Wood Glue</li><li>Caulk/Caulk Gun</li><li>Cordless Drill </li></ul>The entire piece was built out of the two MDF boards.  Bryan started by laying out the doors and cutting pieces to size accordingly. <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Having Temporary Fun in the Laundry Room

I know two things for sure; I love change and I love to make chore time more fun.  Chores are a daily fact of life, so why not work in surroundings that make you smile?  And let's face it, change is exciting!<br /><br />Today's change is another one of those that seemed to pop out of nowhere thanks to another project we are working on.  I have quite the pile of paint supplies, cans and jars on my laundry room floor, so we are in the process of building a new piece of storage furniture for my paint supply clutter {sneak peek <a href="http://instagram.com/p/uEjD9uTcbR/?modal=true" target="_blank">here on instagram</a>}.  When we started the project, I found some <a href="http://www.papersource.com/item/Hummingbirds-Wrapping-Paper/44382050.html" target="_blank">gift wrap</a> that made my heart flutter.  It could have been because I loved the color, the design and the playfulness in the paper, or it could have been the fact that it was covered in hummingbirds.  So I purchased it with the intentions of lining the back of our new paint cabinet.<br /><br />Then, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the paper wouldn't work in the paint cabinet because it wouldn't be given the attention it deserves.  It needed to really make a statement in the laundry room, and <a href="http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2014/02/built-in-laundry-sortingfolding-station.html" target="_blank">the sorting area we built earlier this year</a> seemed to be calling the paper's name.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0xRsDwQiY2Ia_FzhN0hkwBixFGw_ixhjnUZyynjQ0NfazWz0VHOfz-w9uzEIcgrrf0nKxnyzQqRX6UBZKAAY3k_XeyWva5TC3wFzbI7VQ_3hrGMMAgrq0sN0CCHhyphenhyphenlryH0ubtTyCQVqE/s1600/DIY_Wrapping_Paper_Wall_2.jpg" /></a></div><br />But something magical happened and I had an epiphany.  The, "I love a good change" thought entered my mind and I realized that as much as I love the paper now, that someday I may not.  So if I were going to line the built-in folding station, it would need to be with a temporary solution.<br /><br />So I chatted with the hubs about my options.  I knew I could go the easy route and line some foam board or cardboard and pop it into the opening, however, given the traffic the area sees, I opted to line a piece of scrap wood instead.  The wood would be stronger and would be much more difficult to puncture.<br /><br />Bryan cut down two pieces of thin, smooth paneling that had a little give in them {they are thin enough to bend slightly allowing them to wiggle into place}.  I grabbed the spray adhesive, my oversized cutting mat and a utility knife.  Oh!  And some washi tape was there too.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_7438C9ihZxS0BtObSNkzpMbiCqJlRhWQ8BWycK1i4GdtW4MYnlW48_E8ZEEBLxWdwVDrdwt53kUWSL7H7PoJB99Hgh8bwJZ80cCTT1a_2uDK8bY-zJ467IYfzuQ5xq4z7_9jWZLejVI/s1600/DIY_Wrapping_Paper_Wall_1.jpg" /></a></div><br />I positioned the paper on the board and used some washi tape to temporarily hold it in place.  The beauty in washi tape is that I could remove it later without damaging the pretty paper.<br /><br />The process was simple, I lightly sprayed the adhesive onto the wood board and smoothed the pieces of gift wrap with my hand, lining up the pattern to eliminate any visible seems.  The utility knife was helpful in cutting off any excess paper around the edge of the board.<br /><br />Then, we simply popped the boards into the openings.  The way we built in the sorting station allowed the thin piece of paneling to pop right behind a portion of the counter and cabinet without the need to tack anything in place.  However, if you were looking to do something similar and needed to affix the board without damaging the walls, Picture Hanging Command Strips are a really great solution.<br /><br />Up close, I must say, the paper was amongst the loveliest I have seen.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both;
